The sound of Scottish bagpipes echoed across busy El Camino Real on Saturday, drawing attention to Highland Ink, a new shop billed as San Clemente's first tattoo studio.

"I want to bring different cultures to San Clemente," owner Susie Floyd said. "I've traveled all over the world as a high school teacher and I really hope to bring a relaxed, spa-like atmosphere."

The tattoo parlor, which officially opens Tuesday, has a clean, artistic feel, with a dash of Floyd's Scottish heritage thrown in. James Dean's portrait and other artwork decorate the walls, assorted knickknacks sit on shelves and Chuck Berry blares over the loudspeakers. Floyd also plans to show British and Scottish comedies while patrons get inked.

Initially rebuffed by the City Council, Floyd persisted, determined to bring a different image of tattoo art.

"They had a misunderstanding about what tattooing is about," said Floyd. "It used to be about bikers and drugs, but ... that's not the image I want to portray."

Floyd's attorney challenged the city's rejection of her business as a violation of her First Amendment rights.

On Saturday, would-be patrons, employees and friends came out to support the shop's grand opening.

"I don't have a tattoo myself, but this is the kind of place where I'd be seduced into getting one," said Melissa Pelham, San Clemente Art Supply store manager.

Highland Ink employee Greg Millan said, "I've been tattooing for eight years and I'm a lifelong artist. I'm ready for whatever comes through the door."

The work of various local artists and photographers is showcased on the side wall of the downstairs Moroccan lounge area.

"Susie invited me to show some of my work," said photographer Larry Beard. "I was happy to be able to pull something together. I think San Clemente is such a great town and her shop will just bring it more culture."
