Tenth annual Paint San Clemente competition begins with quick still lifes along Del Mar.

The city's 10th annual Paint San Clemente art competition kicked off Saturday with the first of a weeklong series of painting events.
More than 100 artists had three hours to complete a plein air (open air) "quick-draw" still life along Del Mar.
"The artists come from all over," said San Clemente Art Gallery chairman and event organizer Pam Hill. "Some of the artists are from different states and over the years, we've had people from around the world."
Artists set up everywhere--between parked cars, on the street corner, on the grass in front of the San Clemente Art Gallery and beside park benches overlooking the San Clemente Pier--to capture images of flowers, streets and/or posed models.
"I'm really enjoying the beauty today," said model Kerry Herbertof Oceanside. "The one thing I enjoy as a model is how artists find the essence or some small part of me to make their piece different."
Over the next week, artists will capture local scenes, views and still lifes in various mediums.
"This is a beautiful city and a lot can be painted," said artist Steve Wang. "I think this is the best plein art competition in the country."
Wang has participated in the contest every year and helped organized the event. His work is featured at Studio 7 Gallery in Laguna Beach.
The pieces will be judged at the end of the week, with first place receiving $5,000 of the overall $13,000 in prize money.
"This is my fifth year participating," said artist Rich Brimer. "The quick draw is always a fun challenge because it kicks off the painting in San Clemente and it's the only time we artists are all compressed together in one location."
The judges' top 200 picks will be featured in the San Clemente Art Gallery off of Del Mar.
